REMOTE MANAGEMENT
With
improved communications technology, computers and operating systems, for
many people in service related businesses there is no need to visit the
office or clients every day, with its communing problems. The increased use
of computers, modern telecommunications, broadband internet access, remote
computer access, together with the increasing use of the video and audio
conferencing, allows many people to work from other offices, their home,
suppliers or clients premises. However, staff still have to be managed
effectively in these remote, or virtual offices.
All aspects of virtual operations need to be carefully considered before
undertaking such ventures. The benefits and problems of working this way
should be understood by all staff and stakeholders effected. New or
additional technology, systems or operating methods may be required in order
to take advantage of virtual offices. Staff need to be prepared, and
trained, to undertake this new way of working. Adequate support needs to be
provided for the remote staff.

Study
A
language school specialises in providing intensive language tuition to
students in their home, place of work, or other appropriate locations.
Tutors are based at home, in any part of the country. Students may come from
any nation, whether they are living in the country, temporarily assigned to
a different country, or require specific tuition.
Migrators
consultants have implemented virtual management systems for this remote and
diverse operation. Booking, including a basic staff development needs analysis, is
made via the internet and includes location preferences. Once a booking is
received, the details are included in a central database. Based on the
tuition type and location required, an appropriate tutor is selected, and
informed by e-mail. Any additional resources or supporting information is
sent to the tutor via e-mail, fax or postal mail
Tuition
takes place at the students preferred location, with the tutors providing a
short intensive course, dedicated to the needs of the student. During and
after the tuition, assessments of students, and the teaching, are undertaken using
questionnaires, face-to-face discussions, telephone calls and e-mail.
