BUSINESS STRATEGY
Business
strategy is concerned with identifying the future direction of the
organisation. A realistic and engaging vision should be provided to
stakeholders. The strategy should also provide a number of goals and
objectives for the organisation, as well as indicating how they should be
achieved.
Inevitably,
strategy involves decision making. Decision making is easier if the
potential options are identified and assessed early on. These options may
relate to the strategic goals, their benefits, or the ways in which the
goals can be achieved. This approach allows the most appropriate options to
be selected, allowing the decision making to be clearer and easier.
Once the
strategy has been decided, it must be made available to stakeholders. This
should be promoted, and advertised, by a variety of means, including
briefings, documents and other communications methods. For ambitious, or
long term strategies, the vision must be managed appropriately. This will
ensure the vision is understood, as well as highlighting the interim goals,
tasks and objectives required to achieve the vision.

Case
Study
A
telecommunications company wished to provide a Broadband (ADSL) internet
service for its customers.
Migrators
consultants arranged workshops to identify the key aspects required for the
broadband service, as well as the elements that would be required to support
the service. An initial schedule was prepared showing key objectives,
timescales, resources and costs for the main elements of the service. Based
on the schedule, options were developed to show which elements would be
provided by the telecoms company and which could be outsourced.
This
approach simplified the decision making and made it more open. The approach
also ensured the key goals and objectives were identified, enabling the
strategic vision to be prepared. Initial communications campaigns were
prepared to manage stakeholders initial expectations.
