QUICK BRIEF

    BUILDING VIRTUAL TEAMS

In the modern world, many organisations have offices and sites in many different locations. Sometimes, because of distance, special techniques for their management are required, often called remote, or virtual management. One of the best way of managing the work between sites is as a series of virtual teams, all working to the same goals.

When building, or establishing virtual teams, there are a number of different aspects, or characteristics, of individuals and their teams which need to be considered, some of which include:

Team Spirit

Culture

Leadership

Personal Characteristics

Team Participation

Meetings

Social Aspects

Education

Procedures & Tools

Team Dynamics

Communications

Geography

Organisation

Business Culture

Distance

Each of these characteristics contribute a number of strengths and weaknesses to the virtual teams. On their own, each of these characteristics are powerful enough to help a team succeed, or fail. In combination, the strengths and weaknesses of the characteristics may conflict, with each other. A careful balance must be maintained, in order to maintain a good team, which will help them to succeed.

Most virtual managed, teams face a variety difficulties relating to the time, distance, the culture of the organisations and people involved. Good virtual team building can help to improve the team dynamics, as well as reducing some of the difficulties often encountered by virtual teams. Well built teams will also help with the understanding of the different characteristics of the team, as well as placing them in perspective.

Building good teams at the start of a new venture can make the difference between success and failure. Providing a good understanding of the team characteristics, from the start, will provide a good foundation for the virtual team. Later these foundations can be reviewed and built upon as the venture progresses. With the reviews providing the opportunity to adjust and improve the project team dynamics as the venture progresses.

Migrators are able to provide a variety services and techniques aimed at building virtual teams. These techniques help to identify and then balance the strengths and weaknesses of the virtual teams. This can include staff development in Business Culture, communications, leadership and team building. The techniques can be used when building the teams, or at any time when the teams are working together.
